With all that is going on between Sony and Microsoft trying to win a console war, people have taken sides, just like with everything else in this world, and this is the end result. Why do we have to so divided and be so emotional? I think it goes just a little deeper than having a fan favorite. I think the real issue is that everyone wants to have an opinion, think they are right about it and tell it like they see it. That is exactly what has happened with respect to electronic companies. They are called fanboys and to them, one company can do no wrong. Let me give an example.
Yesterday, I got into a discussion with a like minded individual that I have had discussion with before. He basically stated that Apple operating systems are vastly superior to Microsoft operating systems. Now, that being his opinion, I can't argue with that, because no matter how much you argue with someone, their opinion means that they are right. The last time I used a Mac was in high school (12 years ago) and I used to own an iPod. I HATED THE iPod...with a passion. The reason: no customization. The Zune is completely customizable. You can put whatever background you want on there, and Microsoft won't tell you "you can't do that". Does that mean the Zune is better than an iPod? Yes, but only in my eyes. He would probably disagree, and in his eyes, he would be right.
Sony and Microsoft have gone at it for years, and they both have loyal fanboys. I am a fanboy of neither. I own both consoles, and while I think the 360 is superior to the PS3, that doesn't mean the PS3 can't have anything good (Killzone 2 Demo was AWESOME). The fanboy wars need to stop. In reality, we all need to stop and smell the roses and be nice to each others opinion. So, the next time you think it would be fun to incite a fanboy war, watch this video and remember, you could be the guy that Adam Sessler points out.

Heh. He does a great job at pointing out the stupidity at some of those comments. The only sad part is, he's given those commenters 15 minutes of fame. I'm afraid it might not enter their small minds that they're being made fun of. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteJust to set the record straight, I wasn't arguing the overall superiority of the Mac OS--just their security model.
ReplyDeleteI think it's funny that you love the Zune for one of the reasons I hate it--customization. I hate wasting my time customizing every little device I have. Apple did UI right with the iPod and I feel no need to customize it. It just works (for me) and it was intuitive from day one. I am also a huge fan of the AAC audio format and now that iTunes is doing away with all of the DRM, there's no reason I can't buy all my music in that format from here on out.
I guess that's why they have different products for different people, eh? :)
If you really want customizable, you could get a supported media player (including iPod, not including Zune) and install RockBox on it. ;D
ReplyDeleteBut then, my feature list for MP3 players is a little spartan. All I wanted was a device that I could plug into a PC, have it see as an external drive like a USB stick (I don't need no stinkin' management software; Explorer and drag 'n' drop is fine for me), and go. My Sansa fit that bill nicely. (Then I put RockBox on it, and now I play Game Boy games on it, too. :) )
One of my biggest complaints with Apple devices in general is the lock-in. It's not just the device, but it's everything around it. If you want an iPhone, you get the iPhone, you install iTunes, you use AT&T. No choice.
And if you want to upgrade, you have to throw away the one you have and get a new one.
I'm not saying that makes them bad products. I think the iPhone is probably one of the coolest, smartly-engineered devices of the decade. There are just too many strings attached that make me, personally, uncomfortable...
Although, you can't blame Apple for the AT&T exclusivity. Being a newcomer, the ONLY way they were going to get their phone picked up by a provider was to offer exclusivity.
