SkypeCastSuck

I held the skypecast last night and it was not a complete failure, but it sure did measure up to something that resembled suckage. Furgus bailed at the last minute, Mojo didn't want to install Skype on his computer, Spark couldn't make it, Major Nelson couldn't make it, Lono was probably doing the Humpday Update for Sarcastic Gamer that is normally on Wednesday, and Slinger was probably playing Halo3...(rolling eyes).

So in the end it turned out to be just McJeepers and myself. We didn't really talk about anything in depth, but we did touch up on a lot of things that had to do with Fable 2, the galaxy far, far away that is Star Wars, and Don Mattrick of Microsoft. And of course there can't possibly be an episode without bashing the PS3 and the PSN...since when did I become a PS3 H8er? Then to end off the podcast, I play a clip of JameyT on the radio show, Pwned Radio.

I nearly have that project complete, and I am itching to tell everyone! Well, I'm going to post this and then listen to the SkypeCast from last night and look into getting posted.

Jane Wells + CNBC’s Funny Business = Moronic Reporter

Before you read any further read this.

Now, here are the problems that I have with this article.
1. The very first words in her articles, in fact, the first paragraph of the article says for us to forget about the numbers that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo rely on. What moron tells you to forget the numbers that drives an industry? When they look at ratings, should I say, forget about Neilson, your show is the most popular. Would the big studio executives listen to JUST ME instead of Neilson ratings? No, that NEVER EVER, EVER happens!
2. She stated that her son watches G4, “participates in chat rooms about them on the Internet, he competes in a variety of games on a variety of platforms.” And knows the latest trend three months in advance. Let me ask her this: Did he NOT know of Bluray on the PS3 prior to Sony’s press conference at E3 2008? If not, then he must have been living on Venus or he has some sort of mental retardation. I’ve known that the Sony PlayStation 3 had a Bluray player in 2005...because I watch G4 and they had several FUNNY commercials since 2006 that showed the difference between the PS3 and the “other” consoles.
3. He even watched Microsoft’s Press Conference and said that he was excited about the Netflix Streaming and he STILL traded in his 360. Guess what Young Mr. Wells, to stream Netflix movies on your TV, now you have to pay $100 for a Roku Box that will NOT play games.
4. Young Mr. Wells was actually surprised that he was being sold a USED copy of the game from GameStop. Then he had the stupidity of asking “How can the game already be used?” Any moron (except this one, apparently) who has EVER been to a GameStop store (or any major game store retailer for that matter) before knows that the day after a major release of a game, there is ALWAYS a used copy. Why? Because some people buy it, open it; and either hate the game, don’t like it, beat it in one day or in the case of Metal Gear Solid 4, they probably tried to play the online portion and gave up on it.
5. No GameStop employee would tell a patron of their store that “PlayStation players are ninjas!” At least not where I am and not where ReaperGrrl (fellow Geezer) lives. Can anyone ever recall a GameStop employee ever calling PS gamers Ninja’s? What does that mean anyway? That only PlayStation gamers take care of their games. Or are they saying that every PlayStation gamer is the most disciplined gamer in the world? I’m not getting it.

At least she got right the fact that since he wasn’t 17, he couldn’t have bought Metal Gear Solid 4 by himself and had to get his mother to do it for him. But on that note, since she’s main-stream media, has she not heard of Jack Thompson and his fight to keep M-Rated titles out of the hands of minors?

In order for me to believe this story I have to say the following: My opinion is that her 16-year-old-son is actually either a 12-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy with slight mental retardation, or she made the whole story up or embellished some of it to make for a good story. After reading this story I can’t help but shake my head and wonder HOW the mainstream media actually get’s it about video games. Will the PS3 win the console war? Maybe, but it’s not resting on the shoulders of a “16-year-old boy”.

THOSE Magazines

I was listening to a segment on the radio called the Man Segment and it reminded me of something that happened early in my relationship with my wife. We were thinking of getting married and talking about regularly. We were in (at that time) my bedroom and talking about how things would change. She stated something about how she felt kind of uncomfortable about having “those” types of magazines in the house and pointed to my closet. I looked at her with a puzzled look and said, “What’s wrong with those?” She said, “Nothing that I care about, but my dad might not like them.” I looked at her with this face of astonishment and said, “What does he have against those magazines?” She then looked at me and said, “He’s very religious and he might not like them.” I then asked her, “What kind of magazines do you think those are?” She looked at me and said, “Honey, I think its okay if you have Playboy, but my dad might not like it.” I was FLOORED! I then started laughing hysterically. She didn’t get it right away so I said, “Those are GAME magazines!” (GameInformer, OXM and Xbox Nation) We didn’t stop laughing for a good hour. The rest of the week I would go around the house and point at things like soap and toothbrushes and ask her if those were okay.

Bringing Down The House

So, last night was fun. The wife and I, along with my mother, sister and her husband, my wife’s mother, sister and grandmother all went to P.F. Changs for dinner for my wife’s birthday. We had a blast. My wife opened several gifts, each one that she liked. She opened a gift from my mother and set the tissue paper down...but she forgot to look at where she set it down and it ended up on top of a candle. The end result was basically a small fire, in which my mother, also known as StoneHands, took the flaming tissue paper in her hands and crumpled it so that it extinguished the flame. It was nearly the highlight of dinner. After that dinner was dull in comparison, but at least we didn’t burn down the restaurant. Following dinner we walked around the mall, and it was an expensive mall. One store had purses and I had to drag my wife away from that store, and the sales lady was looking at us and laughing the whole time. I then saw this store that had a lot of potential and went in alone. It was called Game Workshop and when I went in I realized that it wasn’t for video games, but instead for turn based games. It had several guys playing Warhammer4000. I’ve never played that game, but it looked neat. After that, we went home and the wife and I had a nice restful night...until...

Episode 8 Is Done!

Spark and I recorded Episode 8 last night and I have already listened to it and am quite impressed with it. Was it our best? Probably not, but we were full of piss and vinegar dealing with the announcements from E3. I don't think that we were nice to anyone...except...well you'll have to listen to find out. When it's posted to the internet I'll post a topic list.

On a more personal note, I for one reason or another have no want or need to do anyting more than I have too. All week long I have been tired and cranky. Don't know why, and I hope it's because of the fact that I just came back from vacation and I'm not fully back yet. I don't know. I hope I get better and start feeling like myself next week.

Due to Technical Difficulties...

Spark and I were committed to recording Episode 8 of Geezer Radio last night but there was a glitch and we weren't able to get it done. But we had a quick brainstorming session and came up with some great topics to discuss. The recording session was put off until tonight, and hopefully we can get it posted sometime this week or early next week. One question that I would like to ask is whether the past couple episodes of Geezer Radio guest hosts, guests and interviews were good and entertaining. Also, how is the state of Geezer Radio as a whole? Please let me know.

I'm Back

Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I have come back from my vacation and am getting settled back into my job. I have a whole lot of thoughts on the Microsoft announcements that were made yesterday, but I'll leave them for the podcast that I think is planned for tomorrow night (I'll have to confirm that). I was going to put something on this blog about my two very spoiled cousins, but in the sense of family unity I decided not too...yet.

Oh, and sorry for not posting yesterday.

The General and the Emo Kid

The trip down to Nags Head was interesting to say the least. For those of you who don’t live in Virginia, Nags Head, NC is the official beach destination for almost all of Virginia. Some smartass people in Richmond once proposed that Nags Head be called an official suburb of Richmond, which the papers labeled humorous attempt at stealing a county from the middle of another state. Anyway, once (sometimes twice) a year my extended family (two branches from a very large tree) go down the Nags Head for a week of vacation fun. This year, since July 4th, a national holiday that fell on a Friday, my mother, my wife, my sister in law and I all decided that we would go down on Friday morning instead of fighting the thousands of other cars that would be traveling on Thursday night. It turned out to be a smart move. The four of us, driving three cars, left Richmond and reached Newport News (still in VA) around eight in the morning. We stopped at a donut shop and after consuming half of an apple fritter, I gathered the other three dreary and near asleep individuals around the car for the last leg of the trip. Let me diverge here and explain something. In my early twenties I was perhaps one of the most anal retentive people on this earth. I would often make trips such as these and have a timeline and execution plan in place with pre-throughout maps and lunch destinations and how long we could take at each. I would then put a half-hour buffer in there for the stops my mother would need to take. At my current age, I’m lucky if I feel the need to print out maps of any sort. It’s nearly a one-hundred and eighty degree change in personal philosophy. So, when were about to leave the donut place, I gather the rag tag group of people around my wife’s care and explain what our next steps are.
“Okay, here’s the game plan, we are going to go through the inner loop, go underneath the tunnel, and hit the NC border. Once we hit the NC border, we will then stop again for restroom breaks. Any questions?”
My wife and mother look at each other as if a long lost relative was leading the charge. My sister-in-law looked at me, saluted and said, “Yes, General!” I just looked at her and said, “Get into the car.” She did and we were on our marry way.
The story picks up when we were just about to hit the VA-NC border. About ten to fifteen miles away from this imaginary line that means so much, we hit what I could only describe as fog. It turned out to be smoke from a fire that had been raging for months now. Apparently, there is a fire raging in NC that is causing lots of smoke that can lessen visibility down to a quarter of a mile and a horrible smell, which is what our three car convoy encountered. It got bad enough that at one point, I couldn’t see my wife’s car that was less than a tenth of a mile behind me. It passed, but I do have to wonder what is going on with that fire? Once we arrived in NC, everything was cherry (I finished the book “Generation Kill” and now am in a Marine Corps language mood, by the way, it was a good book)…I mean good.
I took a nap, while my wife went to the beach for about an hour. I think that was the best hour of sleep that I had down at Nags Head. The next big event on the holiday that is the celebration of our National Independence was the letting off of fireworks, which I must ad was spectacular. But before I go on to the next subject, let me digress and tell you about how much fun I had at the “celebration” of our independence. In Nags Head, the city/county (whichever) uses the pier’s as a way to set them off. There are four, maybe five in total, and they are great places to do such a celebration. Ten people went to see the fireworks, and if you include my sister and her husband going to a different section of the city/county, twelve of the fourteen people made it to watch the legal shock and awe. We get to a place directly in between two of the piers and get ready for the spectacle. As we wait (we got there an hour before the fireworks started) I spy this Emo kid with tight-assed jeans, a white shirt and what I thought was a knit cap (it was dusk so I couldn’t quite see his whole attire). I shook my head and wondered that even at the beach, this kid had to look horrible and piss off his parents. The fireworks, though, were awesome. But this year surprised me. Normally, the past three to four years prior, it was just a couple of people here and there and then the one on the pier, but this year was different. Everyone and their brother had fireworks and some of them were even more spectacular than the city/county fireworks. It was amazing. Just point to any part of the beach and there were fireworks coming from it. I must say the last time that I saw that many fireworks at Nags Head was July 4, 2002 at the height of our patriotic fever. It was a site that I will not soon forget.

Vacation!!!

I will be on Vacation from 7/4 - 7/13. I will not be near a wifi hotspot that I am aware of. I will not be posting on my blog or twitter, that I know of, until I get back to Richmond, VA. If I have a wifi hotspot where I am going, then I might keep you updated on how my week is going at the beach. Take care and let me know if the Xbox 720 comes out!

Summer Slump

Is anyone else in a little bit of a slump or anyone else just have disinterest in playing video games? I love my 360, but right now, I am just not excited about any games that I own. GHII and GHIII are getting a little play. Rainbow Six Vegas is getting some play, but nothing is forcing me to want to play. I either need to get a game that will force me to want a play or take up another hobby. I have six books that I need to read, and that might tide me over until September. Games that I am actively looking to get:
Left 4 Dead
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Guitar Hero: World Tour
Gears of War 2
Viva Pinata 2
SOCOM: Confrontation

I Am A GENIUS!

This was supposed to be posted on 6/27/08.

Just call me a genius...I'm okay with you doing that!

If you listen to Geezer Gamer Cast: Geezer Radio Special Episode 1, you'll hear an interview between SparkStalker, Major Nelson and myself. One of the things I said to him was that I though Avatars would be the next evolutionary step. His response: "Yeah!" Now, I bring you the rumor that would confirm that I am a genius!

Thanks McJeepers and Lono

Being an informed gamer is a pleasure and a curse. On one hand, I can make a better informed decision about the games that I buy and not buy bad games. On the other hand, I feel very snobbish for boycotting games that I have a problem with. For instance, I think boycotting Battlefield: Bad Company is the right thing to do, no matter what the game scored on reviews, I think that making a point about them charging for weapons (which they aren't doing anymore) is something they should NEVER contemplate ever again. Just wait, in about a year or so, EA will try to pull the same stunt again. But there is also the case of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. I love the Guitar Hero games, but spending $60 on a game that has only 41 songs, no improved game play, and songs that I really only half-way like isn't a good idea for me. Now if the game were $30 or even $40, I would have picked it up in a minute. Being an informed gamer leads to this. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? You tell me.

Episode 7 of Geezer Radio is now up and ready for everyone to listen too. McJeepers was the Geezer Co-Host and Lono, from the Sarcastic Gamer podcast and website, was the celebrity co-host. Let me just say that now, I fear Jeeps kicking me out of the GGSE because times inside of Ep 7, Lono and I completely ignore him and just talk.

I ignored a co-workers advice and started to read "Generation Kill" instead of book 5 of the Star Wars Legacy of the Jedi series. So far, the "GK" is decent.
